In many instances, people think that the best place to go with sore, red, or itchy eyes is their GP, however the GP will signpost you to an optometrist so your best to go to them directly.

Optometrist, Willis Wilkie explains that you don’t have to be a glasses wearer to visit an optometrist for help. Anyone in Greater Glasgow and Clyde can visit an optometrist if they have an issue with their eyes.

We are continuing to highlight our NHS Heroes. Meet Kerri Neylon, a GP in Glasgow's Southside and one of the many GPs caring for people in GGC during the busy winter months. Here, Kerri advises when is best to visit a GP and the other options available to you.

Contact your GP if you have an urgent care need, an illness that does not improve with self-treatment, are worried about your health, or have an ongoing health condition.

If you feel like you need to contact your GP, please ensure that you’ve checked self-help guides online and / or spoken with your local pharmacist for advice on common ailments, their treatments and medication first.

This is particularly important with winter viruses at this time of year. Most cough, cold and flu symptoms result from common winter viruses. Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics, so rather than calling your GP, the best advice is to stay at home and take traditional over-the-counter remedies.

On average, NHSGGC patients who visit Minor Injuri

On average, NHSGGC patients who visit Minor Injuries Units are seen, treated, and discharged in two to three hours or less.

If you have a minor injury that you think needs treatment, call 111 and an advisor will either make an MIU appointment for you or will signpost you to another form of care, including our virtual A&E.

Minor Injury Units are the best care option for anyone who needs treatment for conditions such as cuts needing stitches, broken bones below the knee and elbow, sprains, and minor burns, as they have specialised staff, facilities, and processes dedicated to caring for these issues.

Had a bad slip on the ice?

NHSGGC Minor Injury Units are the best care option for anyone who needs treatment for conditions such as cuts needing stitches, broken bones below the knee and elbow, bad sprains, and minor burns.

The MIU has staff, facilities, and processes dedicated to caring for these issues.

It is also a quicker and more comfortable route than waiting at A&E, which is prioritised for urgent and life-threatening conditions.

If you have an injury, call 111 who will advise on if MIU is best for you and give you an appointment time.

Our Accident & Emergency departments are very busy

Our Accident & Emergency departments are very busy right now. A&E is intended for life-threatening conditions and the most serious injuries. In such cases, people should call 999 or go to A&E immediately.

Unless you have a serious injury or your condition is life-threatening, A&E is not the best place to go.

We are asking people to ‘think ABC’ before going to A&E, with quicker ways for you to access the care you need:

🔹 Ask yourself: Do I need to go out? For information on keeping yourself well and treating minor illnesses and injuries from home, go to NHS Inform or download the NHS24 app.

🔹 Be aware: There is help for many conditions right on your doorstep. Your local GP, pharmacy, dentist or optician offer a range of services.

🔹 Call 111: If it’s urgent, or you’re not sure, call NHS24 on 111. They’ll make sure you get the help you need.

We would ask people with cold or flu symptoms to look at the NHS Inform website or the NHS 24 app to help with your symptoms and decision making. If you think your condition is more serious, please call your GP practice or NHS 24 on 111.

And, as the cold snap continues, we are advising people to ‘walk like a penguin’ on ice to reduce the risk of falling:

▪️ Bend your knees slightly and keep them loose.
▪️ Point your feet out slightly.
▪️ Extend your arms at your sides.
▪️ Walk flat-footed, taking short steps.
▪️ Keep your centre of gravity over your feet.

Do you have an eye-related health need? A&E is not

Do you have an eye-related health need? A&E is not the best place to go for the majority of eye-related health problems. Please visit your local optician in the first instance if you have worries about your eyes or vision. As well as having the equipment to carry out a range of health checks and treatments on-site, opticians also have access to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s specialised Acute Referral Centre – a service that can see patients and treat their conditions often within 24 hours.

When it comes to getting around on ice, penguins know best! With the weather turning chilly, adopting your stance is an effective way to move without falling. Give it a try when you’re out and about in the next few days.

Winter viruses are doing the rounds so it is important to remember hand hygiene to protect yourself and prevent the spread. Please take the time to wash hands thoroughly.

Norovirus and other stomach viruses are common rig

Norovirus and other stomach viruses are common right now. See NHS Inform for help guides on how you can look after yourself or loved ones should you be affected.

If you need think you require medical attention and your pharmacy or GP is unavailable, call NHS24 at 111. They’ll help and arrange an appointment if needed, so you can wait comfortably at home.

Please do not attend A&E as you risk passing this to vulnerable people. Think ABC before A&E.

Respiratory viruses such as colds and flu are going around right now.

Most cough, cold and flu symptoms result from common winter viruses. Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics, so rather than calling your GP, the best advice is to stay at home and take traditional over-the-counter remedies.

Remember that these viruses can spread quickly, so only go out if absolutely necessary. Please do not attend A&E with flu symptoms.

You can check your symptoms and decide what to do next by visiting NHS Inform or the NHS 24 app. If you think your condition is more serious, please call your GP practice or NHS 24 on 111.
