Standards of Business Conduct

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is a publicly funded body, accountable to Scottish Ministers and through them to the Scottish Parliament for the services it provides and for the effective and economical use of taxpayers’ money. The three public service values of accountability, probity and openness must therefore be at the heart of our activities and not only must we adhere to these principles we must also be seen to do so. To ensure this is the case NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has a Standards of Business Conduct for Staff, which permanent post-holders, Bank staff, Agency staff, Locums, other temporary staff and Honorary Consultants are required to adhere to and which is incorporated into the standard contract of employment for all staff.

NHSGGC Standards of Business Conduct for Staff are based around the Standards of Business Conduct for NHS Staff contained in NHS Circular MEL (1994) 48 and updated to reflect the Ethical Standards in Public Life etc (Scotland) Act 2000 and the Bribery Act 2010. The Standards of Business Conduct aim to embed ethical standards into the organisation by ensuring that all staff:

  1. Safeguard the interest of patients at all times;
  2. Remain impartial and honest in the conduct of their business;
  3. Use the public funds entrusted to them to the best advantage of the service, always ensuring value for money;
  4. Do not abuse their official position for personal gain or to benefit their family and/or friends;
  5. Do not seek to advantage or further their private business or other interests, in the course of their official duties.
