This winter, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is asking everyone to follow ABC before A&E to make sure that everyone gets the right care in the right place.
The first step is to ask yourself if you can treat your illness at home if it’s not a serious matter that needs a trip to A&E.
And a properly stocked medicine cabinet at home is key to your self-care.
Some of the treatments you should consider having to hand at home include:
Simple painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen tablets for headaches or pain
Ibuprofen gel which can be used for muscular pain
Antihistamines to treat mild allergic reactions
Laxative and rehydration sachets to treat constipation or diarrhoea
Indigestion remedies
Antiseptic cream to clean minor cuts and abrasions
Plasters and bandages
If you’ve already got a well-stocked medicine cabinet, have a quick check that your remedies are still in date. Out of date items could be inefective or even dangerous.
For information on keeping yourself well and treating minor illnesses and injuries from home, go to NHS Inform or download the NHS24 app.
You’ll also find information on what you can do if you still feel unwell or are concerned about your symptoms at NHS Inform
Remember, accessing the right care is as easy as ABC:
Ask yourself: Do I need to go out? For information on keeping yourself well and treating minor illnesses and injuries from home, go to NHS Inform or download the NHS24 app.
Be aware: There is help for many conditions right on your doorstep. Your local GP, pharmacy, dentist or optician offer a range of services.
Call 111: If it’s urgent, or you’re not sure, call NHS24 on 111. They’ll make sure you get the help you need.
Unless it’s an emergency, think ABC before going to A&E.
