Greenock’s stunning new health and care centre has won a major national award. The £21 million facility, which opened last year, has picked up the best new health building at the Scottish Design Awards 2022.
Built on a former brownfield site, the building is home to three large GP practices, pharmacy, social care and community dental services. The unique challenges of the site, including a 15 metre change on the steeply sloping hill it sits on led to innovative design solutions, including establishing a stunning central courtyard garden and internal atrium. Upper floors include office space and a roof terrace and breakout space with incredible views over the river Clyde. Patients also have access to a ground floor community café and the entire building is home to a series of curated art works from local creators and artists, which reflect the history and culture of Greenock and Inverclyde.
John Donnelly, Head of Capital Planning at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: “Greenock Health and Care Centre has been a huge hit with both patients and the teams who use it. We’re delighted that the work has been recognised and I want to pay tribute to Hoskins Architects and our partners at Hub West Scotland, Inverclyde Health and Social Care Partnership and our capital team here are NHSGGC. Their collective efforts have built an incredible community asset that provides a template for sustainable, community health and care facilities going forward.”
A key part of the project was sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, as part of NHSGGC’s net zero strategy. The building surpasses its carbon emission target by 15 per cent, with initial planning and 3D energy modelling helping to inform the location and design of the site.
Councillor Colin Jackson, Inverclyde Council’s health and social care convener, said: “This national award is further recognition that all the time and effort spent developing the new Greenock Health and Care Centre was worth it.
“The building has everything you would expect from a modern healthcare facility making best use of the available indoor and outdoor spaces for the benefit of service users and staff.
“This is the second design award following a prize from the Glasgow Institute of Architects late last year and huge congratulations must go to Hoskins Architects and all the health board, council and health and social care partnership staff who worked so hard on designing and delivering this first-class health centre for Inverclyde.”
