The Cabinet Secretary for Health, Wellbeing and Sport, Shona Robison, today announced the appointment of the new Chair of Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS Board.
Mr John Brown will take up the post on 1 December 2015, when the current Chair is due to stand down.
Mr Brown’s early career included a variety of jobs across different Government Departments and Agencies, including the Department of Health & Social Security, Benefits Agency, Child Support Agency and the Contributions Agency.
Since June 2014 he has been employed as Company Secretary of the Student Loans Company. Prior to this Mr Brown was a Senior Civil Servant and held a variety of challenging leadership roles at HM Revenue & Customs and the Inland Revenue. He is a Chartered Management Accountant, has an MBA degree from the University of Glasgow and is a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership & Management.
In 2010, Mr Brown was awarded a CBE in recognition of his contribution to improving leadership in the public sector.
Mr Brown is currently a Board Member of NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde.
Health Secretary Shona Robison welcomed the appointment and said she looked forward to working with Mr Brown in his new role.
Ms Robison said: “I’m pleased to be able to appoint Mr John Brown as Chair of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and I am confident that he will bring a wealth of experience to this important role.
“With an extensive public sector background and extensive experience of leading large, customer facing organisations through transformational change; as well as his experience as a non-executive member of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, I know he will be well placed to take the Health Board forward.
“I look forward to working with Mr Brown in this new position and in the months ahead”.
Background
Mr Brown’s appointment will be for 4 years and commence on the 1st of December 2015 and end on the 30th of November 2019.
This appointment is part-time and attracts an annual remuneration of £40,335 for a time commitment of 3 days per week. This time will be a mix of daytime board meetings; daytime visits and other meetings; reading documents at home and attending stakeholder events, some of which may be in the evenings or at weekends.
Mr Brown is currently a non-executive member of Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS Board, for which he receives an annual remuneration of £8,088 for a time commitment of around 8 hours per week. This appointment will end when he takes up his position as Chair.
This appointment is regulated by the Commissionerfor Ethical Standards in Public Life in Scotland.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. Mr Brown has had no political activity in the last five years.
The Chair of the NHS Board plays a central role in guiding the strategies which address the health priorities and health care needs of the people in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area.
