NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde is encouraging all Freshers and returning students to ensure they have access to the appropriate healthcare during their studies as part of NHSGGC’s 2023/24 student campaign.
The campaign focuses on providing students with the dedicated resources and information they require to make informed decisions about their healthcare and avoid unnecessary visits to accident and emergency departments.
A Student Health Checklist has been created to provide students with useful resources and tips on important services within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and how these can be utilised in the most effective way.
Each semester, Glasgow and the surrounding areas welcomes students from around the world and NHSGGC is committed to ensuring that our accident and emergency departments do not become overwhelmed this winter period.
Students can access the health boards dedicated Student Hub web page where they can find information on their nearest pharmacy and learn about mental and sexual health services available to them.
There is also information on how you can use our virtual A&E service where you can access emergency care from the comfort of your own home and avoid potentially long waiting times in physical A&E departments. This can be reached by calling NHS 24 on 111.
Students are also encouraged to register with a local GP to ensure they have access to primary care when they need it, and our resources can help direct students to the most appropriate healthcare pathway.
Dr Kerri Neylon, Deputy Director for Primary Care across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said:
“As we welcome new and existing students across our colleges and universities this semester, it is important that we highlight the key healthcare pathways that they should be aware of when they need to access care.
“We want students to have the best possible education and to settle in quickly, but there is a pressing need to ensure they are accessing the right healthcare at the right times to avoid further pressures on all our services, including emergency departments.
“Starting university or college can be a daunting experience and we want to make sure students have one less thing to worry about by understanding the different health services available to keep them safe.”
