Rowanbank Clinic forensic psychiatric unit in Glasgow has received a positive report following a visit by the Mental Welfare Commission in November.
Rowanbank Clinic is a medium secure psychiatric unit on the Stobbill campus, with 74 adult beds. This facility provides services both nationally and regionally for adults with mental health problems who may pose a risk to others or have the potential to commit an offence because they are unwell. The unit provides specialist treatment and support in modern, purpose-built accommodation designed to meet individualised patient needs.
The commission commented that the unit has a high number of patients requiring enhanced levels observation, and occupational therapy input was beneficial as part of their care plans. During the visit it was noted that encouraging developments on Sycamore Ward, such as one-to-one sessions and group events, had led to improved relationships between patients and staff, as well as less need for enhanced observations.
It was also noted that staff knew their patients well and most patients found them to be helpful and approachable. The wards were also found to be calm on the day of the visit.
Some Rowanbank Clinic patients have significant physical health care needs in addition to their mental health issues and inspectors found there was “very good attention to physical health care and good input from physiotherapy in relation to patient recovery.”
Patients were also complimentary about the range of activities on offer to them in Rowanbank. Given the fact it’s a medium secure facility, the majority of the activities are held on site, however most patients reported having “lots of opportunities to attend a wide variety of activities on the wards or in the grounds and community centre.” Activities include football, swimming, craft activities as well as attending the gym.
One issue that patients did raise was in relation to the food they were offered and they also said portions were too small. This recommendation has been raised with senior managers who are now addressing this issue.
Frances McLinden, Regional Services Director for NHSGGC said: “Staff at Rowanbank Clinic should be very proud of this report which highlights positive relationships with patients and a strong commitment to patient-centred care.”
