NHSGGC staff in latest cycle ride to new South Glasgow University Hospitals

  • 2 min read

This summer will see thousands of patients and staff take part in the largest ever migration to a new hospital in Glasgow’s history.

As part of a programme of travel information initiatives aimed at NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (NHSGGC) staff, a cycle ride to the new South Glasgow University Hospitals (SGUH) from the west end was held on Saturday, 11 April for staff.

The guided ride, facilitated by the Bike Station, left for the new campus at 1pm from Bike Stations premises at 65 Haugh Road, Glasgow G3 8TX.

The outward journey travelled via Bells Bridge to the hospital where there was a talk on cycle parking and rider facilities provided on the campus.

Returning to the Bike Station, riders travelled back via the Clyde Tunnel where staff had a chance to see what improvements have been made for cyclists accessing the SGUH campus.

Katharine Brough, Travel Planning & Systems Manager, NHSGGC, said: “The move to the new hospitals is the biggest ever migration of services in the history of Glasgow health care.

“We want to ensure staff are fully prepared for the move and have a travel plan in place.

“This is one in a number of initiatives to help staff cycle to work.

“This latest guided ride from the west end showed staff two different routes as well as providing more information on facilities at the hospital for cyclists.”

There are 628 cycle spaces at the hospitals made up of a mixture of covered and secure spaces in well lit areas. Lockers and showers are provided in the hospital following discussions with the Bike User Group.

NHSGGC also runs a Cycle to Work scheme to encourage people to cycle. Further details are available at www.cyclescheme.co.uk
