Glasgow Royal Infirmary has been presented with a national award in recognition of its excellence in the care of patients who experience a hip fracture.
The Golden Hip Award is given to the Scottish hospital that meets the highest overall performance measures against a set of standards for hip fracture patients over the course of a year.
The news comes as the GRI was named as Scotland’s best hospital as part of a global ranking system by US publication Newsweek.
There are a number of teams who look after patients who have broken a hip. The patient’s journey begins in the Emergency Department and will include input from ED medical and nursing staff, radiologists, the orthopaedic surgical team, nurses, occupational therapists and older peoples’ services.
Fiona Youngman, from the Highly Specialised Physiotherapist Orthopaedics Team, said: “We were delighted to find out we’d won the award. It is fantastic for the whole multi-disciplinary team to gain recognition for the improvements we have made to deliver a high standard of care for all hip fracture patients. We are motivated to maintain these high standards of care, looking for ways to keep improving.”
Fiona added that key to the hospital’s success is the drive to improve standards. She added: “Over the past few years we have taken a multi-disciplinary team approach to improving our attainment of the national hip fracture standards, which has been key to improve the all-round care and outcomes of our hip fracture patients.”
Much has changed in the treatment and care of those who have broken a hip, with most patients getting out of bed the day following surgery and with help and support, increasing mobility and regaining their independence as soon as possible.
Karen Adam from the Directorate of Health Performance and Delivery from Scottish Government, said: “Well done to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for obtaining the Golden Hip Award. “This prestigious award is in recognition of achievement of the highest Standards of Care for patients’ who sustain a hip fracture. To accomplish this is through a focused and consistent multidisciplinary team approach ensures the best care and outcomes for this mainly frail group of patients.”
